Harry Chapin appeared on The Mike Douglas Show numerous times, including stints as co-host for a day and later for a full week. For some, his most memorable performance in 1975 when he performed Cat's in the Cradle. Child actor Mason Reese, who was co-hosting, became visibly upset by that Harry was going to perform "that cat song". The went to a commercial break calm him down, but upon return he could still be heard in background complaining that he was promised Harry would not sing that song.
The TV show was syndicated and filmed many weeks before the actual broadcast dates. The dates mentioned below are the first scheduled appearance. For example, at Howie Fields web site, the dates from TV Guide are a week later than official initial air date. Fields site also provide interesting stores and photos from the appearance that was broadcast the week of June 30, 1975.[1]
Harry also performed Sniper (date unknown) in spite of TV network censors warnings regarding the appropriateness of the material. [1]

- February 14 - Harry is co-host for the day in a week featuring singer songwriters as co-hosts. Harry performed Taxi, Circle, and Sunday Morning Sunshine. - May 21 - Totie Fields co-hosts. Rock band Kiss also performed on this show.[5]
- July 11 - Bobby Riggs co-hosts.[6]
- November 4 - Cicely Tyson co-hosts. Harry performs I Wanna Learn a Love Song and Cat's in the Cradle.[7]

- January 23 - Vic Damone co-hosts.[8]
- March 26 - Child actor Mason Reese co-hosts. Harry performs Cat's in the Cradle.[9]
- April 2 - Flip Wilson co-hosts. Harry performs I Wanna Learn a Love Song and Tangled Up Puppet (which is credited as Jamie at tv.com). Also appearing on this episode were Dyan Cannon, worm expert George Sroda, Melba Moore, and Alvin Toffler.[10]
- June 30 - Harry co-hosts for the week and performs I Wanna Learn a Love Song. Harry was joined by brothers Tom, and Steve and dad Jim. Those appearing include Tony Randall, the Letterman, comics Norm Crosby and Mr. Echo, Claire Timmermans, and Jack Valente. [11] [1]
- July 1 - Harry co-hosts for the week. On this show he sings W*O*L*D. Steve Goodman performs "City of New Orleans". Also appearing are Richard Pryor, Tom Chapin, Charlie Callas, Lulu Parker Betenson (sister of Butch Cassidy).[12] [1]
- July 2 - Harry co-hosts for the week and performs Cat's in the Cradle. Guests include Ben Vereen, Barry Newman, Rocky Graziano, and F. Lee Bailey.[13] [1]
- July 3 - Harry co-hosts for the week. Guests include David Brenner, the Pointer Sisters, worm expert George Sroda, and a demonstration by a 10 year-old unicyclist. [14] [1]
- July 4 - Harry co-hosts for the week. Guests include George Hamilton, Dick Shawn, violinist Itzhak Perlman (performing Perpetual Motion and Scott Joplin's "Elite Syncopations", and the Frank Hunter Band.[15] [1]
- September 22 - Eddie Fisher co-hosts. Comedian David Brenner also appears on this show.[16]
- December 3 - Cliff Robertson co-hosts. Both Harry and Tom appear on the show.[17]

- December 15 - Harry performs one song and is interviewed.[1]
